Atlantic Construction carried out building and renovation work on our 1920s detached house in Rhiwbina Cardiff. The work involved the building of a large 2 story extension to the rear of the property creating a kitchen / living / dining area and the addition of an en-suite bedroom on the 1st floor. In addition the property was completely rewired, all windows were replaced, a garden shed / summer house built, the garage roof replaced and the grounds landscaped.
Atlantic Construction were initially introduced to us by our architect as part of a group of builders who were invited to tender for the work. From the initial site meeting prior to providing the tender it was clear the family firm were highly professional and extremely personable allowing an excellent working relationship to be quickly established. This along with the advice provided at this early stage by Len and his team made them an easy choice to carry out the work. Len’s motto is “your builder is your friend” and this very much proved to be the case.
The preparatory work for our build was quite invasive requiring the demolition of an existing “lean to” utility room and the removal of a large section of the rear wall. Despite the major disruption we lived in the property throughout except for a 2 week period when rewiring was been carried out. To facilitate this the team constructed temporary stud walls to separate the living space from the major works. They also relocated some our old units and provided plumbing and power to create a temporary kitchen area. They also helped with moving furniture and appliances and offered the use of vehicles to move items to storage.
There was obvious attention to health and safety with the work areas fenced off from public access, high vis and protective equipment being worn at all times. The team brought their own cabin for breaks and storage as well a portable toilet to the site and all areas were brushed and tidied at the end of each day, drawing several comments from neighbours as to the obvious professionalism of the firm.
Work was well planned and progressed very much to schedule with only a few minor unavoidable delays due to weather as work commenced in mid-winter. The guys were prompt in attending the site and on no occasions did they fail to arrive without prior explanation, such as when the temperature was too low for block work. The bulk of the work was completed within 4 months. We were kept well informed at all times and inevitable snags were quickly resolved due to the obvious expertise Len his team and sub-contractors possess from so many years of experience in the construction industry. Invaluable advice was gratefully received with supplier for materials and decisions made during the build. The guys often went the extra mile including returning to site in the evening for discussion and on one occasion on a weekend to let us in after we had managed to lock ourselves out! All work was carried out to a high standard and the team take obvious pride in the quality of their work. As an example, skimming of rooms not in the original scope was carried out at no extra cost to ensure the standard of finish. The team have also been happy to return promptly to address any minor snags or additional work several months after completing the build.
We could not be more pleased with the finished building which is stunning and has transformed our home and lifestyle. We have numerous compliments from friends and family who visit. We have indeed come to regard Len and his sons as friends and we miss seeing them daily. We would recommend Atlantic Construction without hesitation to anyone looking to carry out building work.
